Crispy Seaweed

Seaweed has been eaten in South Wales for centuries.  We believe it was first given to the miners of South Wales to help boost their vitamin & mineral levels.  Due to long hours spent underground in poor conditions lots of miners suffered from vitamin deficiencies and bad chests.  Doctors of that time discovered that by eating the local Laver seaweed they could hugely improve their conditions.  Therefore, laverbread was born.  The name laverbread came from the “Laver” being the type of seaweed and “bread” because they mixed the seaweed with oats to bulk it up to eat.

Laverbread became a popular meal especially at breakfast time eaten traditionally with bacon & sausage.  Over recent years we have discovered that this delicious and nutritious dish has become less popular due to the nations obsession with less healthy, convenience & fast foods.  However due to our passion for laverbread we have persevered to promote this special dish by appearing on numerous TV cookery programmes and in newspaper articles.  All of which were extremely impressed by the high quality and taste of our product.

Even though Selwyns are determined not to lose the tradition of cooking and eating laverbread we decided to venture out to find new markets and ideas for this type of seaweed.  After research Selwyns identified that Seaweed was also eaten in Asian countries, mainly Japan.  On our first visit to Japan in 2008 Selwyns discovered that nearly everyone in Japan ate Laver seaweed known there as “Nori”.  Nori is consumed in various ways and is eaten at every meal time.  The Japanese people have also been eating Laver seaweed for centuries and now have the need to farm the seaweed due to high demand.  They have also completed extensive research into the nutritional benefits of Laver Seaweed and proved its goodness.

It was during this visit that we were first introduced to the notion of eating Laver Seaweed as a snack.  After many years of hard work and development with our Asian counterparts, Selwyns are proud to launch its first of many new seaweed snack products.  Selwyns believes that by creating a crispy texture to the seaweed and by adding flavours to suit the European palate,  new & exciting Selwyns Crispy Seaweed is the future for Laver Seaweed.

This product is any dieter's dream, at only 10 calories per pack and totally fat free. It might look like a small snack, but being dried seaweed it soon fills you up with satisfaction until your next meal.

With a new design and packaging Selwyns hopes to enter the snack market supplying a great tasting, alternative, fashionable product at a competitive price.  At present two flavours are available, original Flavour and Hot n Spicy, although dozens of new flavours and ideas for this product are in the pipeline.
Selwyns Crispy Seaweed snack is now available to purchase online.  Your questions and comments are welcome.
